Nine months.

While biking through Williamsburg tonight, my ear caught an angelic voice whilst my eyes caught a glimpse of dim light tucked on a quaint street. I had to find out where it was coming from. I quickly turned around, and followed the voice. It led me to a bar called Lot 5 Bar. The voice turned out to be Joni Mitchell, blaring to an empty minimalist bar with a lone Polish bartender named Emilia. So I had no choice but to go in and have a drink. Emilia and I shared our NY wartime stories; stories of heartache, struggle, love, and redemption. Before we knew it, two hours flew by and I had to make my way home in the crisp, autumn night. The bare streets were my friends and I finally made my way home, feeling accomplished. Alright NY, I forgive you.

January

Winter is one of my favorite seasons. Maybe it reminds me of my country and the (mostly) four seasons each province encounters. What I like most about winter though, is that it represents a sort of "reset" button in the year. A time to reflect and hibernate; a time in which being recluse is absolutely acceptable and understandable. I think that it's healthy to take a break from the world, from the humming and the hawing, from even your closest friends.

I've taken the time to look inwards rather than outwards during the winter and it's been nice to just focus on myself for a while - which tends to happen by default as a musician already but I wanted to search a little deeper. Writing has been the perfect vehicle for me to express the musings in my head and surely, soon enough, I will have another record in the can.

I have two shows in January, one tomorrow, in fact. I'll be playing at Pianos at 8pm with my right-hand-man, Rob Ritchie on guitar, and another show on January 29th at Strong Place at 7:30. All details are in the 'Events' section of my website.

Amid the bristling air and clear blue skies, I have also managed to get a little help from my friends and submitted a video for this year's NPR Tiny Desk Concerts Competition. You can check out the video here.

Winter feels warmer when you have friends around, so I hope to see you sooner than later.

LIVE AT PIANOS

I hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving with friends and family galore. I spent mine with my roommate and his friends, which was absolutely lovely. Everyone brought their creations and we all ate on a sacrificial ping pong table; which later lent its purpose when we needed to immediately shed a few grams post-face-stuffing.

Friends are great to have around, and I really hope to see you around on the 1st of December as we seal the year with a few gigs. We hit at 9pm in the upstairs lounge and it's going to be great to share the bill with fellow McGill alumni Alex Mallett (at 8pm) and Dylan Sneed (7pm). If you can't make it out on Monday, I will also be playing at Silvana's on Saturday, December 13th at 8pm. It's a great spot in Harlem with a spacious stage and good sound.

In other news, we have one more recording date in the studio and then we'll be off to mixing. Nir and I are super excited to move forward with the record.

...more news to come!

SOWEE..

I know I've been out of touch... but that's because I've been having so much fun this summer. In late July, I got to visit my 88 year-old grandmother. She makes this amazing traditional morsel of goodness called "zhong". I had decided in the spring that I would take on the challenge of learning her recipe before it would be too late to do so. Here are my first four attempts:

It's a one-day process with lots of soaking - rice, mung beans, bamboo leaves, dried shrimp, dried scallops. It is delicious. I meticulously wrote down all the instructions and took video after video to make sure I didn't skip a step.

In the midst of visiting my family, my friends and my birthplace, my homies from PAX HUMANA released an album, which I am super proud to be on:

CLICK HERE to buy the album.

Now here's the thing: my alter ego "Cailla" also released music this summer, making this my first official EP on iTunes! With the boys at DISTRI.CO in D.C., along with producer Mesta Bish, we were able to release this baby. This is one of my more "poppier"-sounding projects. Enjoy and support!

I feel like I've accomplished so much this summer, yet there's so much more to do, which makes living in NY so exciting. Nir and I are heading back into the studio on the 25th and 26th to lay down guitars and vocals..the final s t r e t c h is here and I can't wait to share my prized baby with you guys once it's done. Until then, I have a few shows coming up - it would be great to see you there. Check out the "SHOWS" section of my site for more details.
